Moutan is used in
Traditional Chinese medicine mainly for inflammation,
promotes circulation, cools the blood,
and reduces fever. Research confirms it
has antibacterial action and lowers blood
pressure. Moutan is also used in Chinese "nourishing
yin" herbal formulas for premature ejaculation
before or during intercourse. The Chinese name for this herb is mu dan pi
and it is also used to "tonify both the yang and the yin".
In Chinese herbalism, deficiency of yin in the liver and kidney marked by dizziness, blurred vision, and
tinnitus. And if the problem that involves deficiency of yin
that affects yang persists then it may result in deficiency of both yin and yang, manifested as aversion to cold, cold limbs, edema, diarrhea, pale tongue
with whitish fur, deep thready and weak pulse, the treatment should be aimed at nourishing the kidney-yin and warming its yang,
It is also used in herbal blends for the respiratory
system.
