   Damiana was named mizib-coc by the Maya Indians of Yucatan. Mizib-coc means "plant for asthma" for which was used by the Indians. It was used by the Maya Indians for pulmonary (lung) disorders, dizziness, vertigo (imbalance) and as a general body cleanser. The herb’s reputation for arousing sexual desire is noted by the second part of its botanical name, aphrodisiaca. Damiana is known as a sexual rejuvenator in lose of vitality of the sexual organs, even when the cause is either abuse or senility. Damiana has been recommended for increasing the sperm count in the male.

Damiana is often used for treating female problems, in Mexico. It is excellent at restoring an exhausted state of the body and increasing its vital energies. For women, it has been found to strengthen reproductive organs and helps with menopause, by controlling and reducing hot flashes. It has also been used to strengthen the ovum in the female and it also helps to balance the hormones in women. 

It is one of the herbs of choice for helping with sexual impotency and infertility with both males and females.

The leaves are a tonic to the nerves and a stimulant in sexual weakness. It is esteemed for its aphrodisiac properties and its excellent effect on the reproductive organs. It overcomes exhaustion and has a tendency to help in the loss of power in the limbs.

Damiana is a laxative for children.

Damiana has also been used for cough preparations, helps to relieve cold symptoms, relieves flu symptoms and is a stimulant for the Central Nervous System.

The herb also stimulates muscular contractions of the intestinal tract.
